ALEKS PPL Mathematics Assessment Exam

The University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign requires all incoming freshmen to take the ALEKS PPL Mathematics Assessment Exam to assess students' mathematical knowledge for advising and course placement. 

ALEKS PPL is available to all incoming students free of charge. 

Freshmen must complete the assessment prior to signing up for registration (NSR).

Backed by decades of research, ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) is the premier adaptive learning and assessment platform used by millions of students around the world. ALEKS PPL uses adaptive, open-response questioning to rapidly and accurately assess each student on a wide range of course material in 30 questions or less. Students are advised, correctly placed, and given the opportunity to increase their mathematical knowledge in a targeted learning environment with up to 12-months of access to the Prep and Learning Module. A seamless transition from assessment to learning empowers students and builds learning momentum.

The following ALEKS PPL score requirements/recommendations are in effect for all students:

Math 112 40% Required
Math 115 / Math 234 65% Required
Math 220 / Math 221 80% Required
 
Math 101 20% Recommended
Math 103, 112, 114, 117, 119, 181 50% Recommended
Math 124, 125 65% Recommended

Every student enrolled in Math 112, 115, 220, 221, or 234 must obtain the minimum required ALEKS PPL placement score (listed above).
